The past few weeks I have been either sewing or crocheting with all 4 seasons! Today I get to show you my Christmassy makes with the brand new fabric collection called Frost & Flurry by Poppie Cotton. It's a whimsical vintage-inspired line with my favorite pinks and blues added in, snowmen and ornaments, etc. This was the selection I chose to work with for my projects.

My main project was a wall hanging. I saw an Instagram photo of a project where the maker had finished individual quilt blocks and then joined them with yo-yos. I loved it, and thought of doing a Christmas version.

First I Googled ideas for Christmas blocks, finding or adapting 4 different free 8" block patterns. A classic tree, a star, double candy canes, and a big 3D bow were my choices.

I think the star is my favorite!

I custom quilted them using 2 layers of batting, and facing them instead of binding, so that the unquilted edge would be nice and puffy to frame it. 

Then I had to settle down to make yo-yos. Lots and LOTS of yo-yos! 

I ended up making 79 of them, and I have to say that using a Clover yo-yo maker helped a TON. I highly recommend if you're going to make a lot of them. It makes the job so much easier, faster, and have a better finish. These used the orange "large" size yo-yo maker.

Once it was all assembled, I love how it turned out! I probably won't make another one of this style any time soon, but I'm glad I branched out to try something a little different this time. 

Using the yo-yos this way both frames the blocks nicely, and also pulls in all the other cute fabrics I wasn't able to showcase in the blocks. 

I'll have to fold it away for now, but it will be so fun to pull out a brand new finish when it's time to decorate for Christmas!

My second project was a girl's dress for my 5-year-old.

I used a vintage 1930s pattern from my stash – this is a simple style that slips over the head and ties in back, so it's size forgiving and comfortable. 

I did the yoke and sleeves in a contrast so they would stand out. Aren't those butterfly sleeves too adorable? I think it's my first time making ones quite like this. 

I chose two of the less Christmas-specific prints because I knew she would wear it this summer.  You can see how versatile the fabric is!

It was quick to make and she likes her new dress a lot.
