It’s my day to show what I made with the new Poppie Cotton fabric line called Unicorn Dreams. It’s not completely my style, but I chose a few favorite prints to make a Japanese rice bag.

I’d never made one before, so I watched this YouTube how-to and made a prototype. For that one I used part of a Lori Holt layer cake, and you can see how different it looks with the patchwork style rather than all one fabric for outside and lining.

For both I followed the YouTube instructions but started with 10″ squares. Since I used just regular quilt batting rather than a stiffer stabilizer, it does collapse a little, but holds its shape remarkably well.

It’s also remarkably roomy. You can fit multiple fat quarter bundles or skeins of yarn in there – it will be an idea crochet or larger project bag!

I love how the flat bottom makes it sit flat and open.

I used the adorable label print to fussy cut some appliqué patches for the outside. A few of the labels were blank so of course I had to dress them up with embroidery.

I also used the label print to make the pocket, which I sewed to one lining square before I assembled it. I made it super simple by just folding it in half and cutting it out with my scalloped pinking shears.

The patchwork one I quilted each square differently. For this version I quilted them all the same in a triple plaid.

The whole style was super quick and easy. The quilting was the longest part, and it could easily be put together in an hour or two. Also there are so many ideas for how to make and finish the tie ends – or you can just knot them. Here I used some cute little flower spacer beads above the knot.

It would make a great gift! Actually it would make a great gift bag, too. I’ll have to keep that in mind for the holidays.

I love the soft peach & yellow & sage color combo. It’s so perfect for this time of year! This one will definitely get a lot of use.
